In a couple of weeks, we’ll get our first look at Hyundai’s next-gen small EV, in the form of a concept bound for the Munich motor show.

Expected to be sold as either the Ioniq 2 or Ioniq 3, the new model will build on the futuristic styling themes established with the second-gen Kona and the recently facelifted Ioniq 6 sedan.

So far, we’ve been given only two teaser images, both stylised as art deco illustrations, but spy photos published by Carscoops in July show that it’ll debut as a lightly jacked-up hatch.

The camouflaged hatch carries some Veloster themes, with a similarly tapered roof and belt line racing up to meet at a high-set rear lip – which won’t do much for visibility, but it’s a look.

Expect the new model to use the same 400V E-GMP underpinnings that feature under the EV4, with something like a single 150kW motor and a ~60kWh battery pack.

If Hyundai offers the same driving range claim as Kia, that’ll mean around 630 kilometres off a single charge.

For exterior dimensions, the EV4 hatch measures 4430mm long on a 2820mm wheelbase.

A Toyota Corolla, as a familiar example, comes in at 4370mm and 2640mm respectively. Hyundai’s own i30 hatch is around the same, at 4340mm and 2650mm.

Like the EV4, Hyundai’s new EV should have a considerably longer wheelbase than any conventional small car, allowing for much greater interior space – especially in the rear, where regular small cars like the Corolla and i30 traditionally do less well.

Watch for more on the new small Hyundai to be revealed on September 9.
